Receipts are often produced using thermal paper, which contains bisphenol A (BPA). It is highly recommended to refuse receipts in order to avoid potential health risks associated with BPA exposure, including disruption of the endocrine system, reproductive and developmental issues, increased risk of certain cancers, metabolic and immune system problems, and increased risk of heart disease.

  1. Cardiovascular disease Research BPA has been linked to:
  • Irregular heart rate
  • High blood pressure
  • Increase blood lipid levels

A thorough 2016 review in Current Hypertension Reports found BPA to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

2. Cancer BPA has been found to mimic estrogen in the body. This can lead to the development of certain types of cancer. Studies show BPA also causes:

  • Cellular damage
  • Genetic damage
  • Immune system disruption

These factors also increase your risk of cancer.

3. Hormonal disruption BPA binds to the same receptors as estrogen. This can lead to negative changes in your:

  • Hormone signalling
  • Endocrine system
  • The function of other hormones like testosterone

This affects reproductive, metabolic, and digestive processes.

3) Neurological disorders BPA has been linked to increased risk of:

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Depression
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease

This is believed to be related to how BPA interferes with hormonal signalling in the brain, damages cells, and affects genes.

4) Cardiovascular disease Research BPA has been linked to:

  • Irregular heart rate
  • High blood pressure
  • Increase blood lipid levels

A thorough 2016 review in Current Hypertension Reports found BPA to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

5) Reproductive problems as mentioned earlier — BPA disrupts hormonal function. This can cause:

  • Low sperm count
  • Poor sperm health
  • Increased risk of infertility

A 2014 review found BPA to be a “reproductive toxicant” in humans.
